Happy Thanksgiving

Click to view slideshow.This year we decided to have a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Instead of turkey we ate “personal chickens” (this is what Kate calls Cornish game hens). Our side dishes were stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes, crescent rolls, steamed broccoli, and cauliflower. Even though we didn’t have turkey, you cannot have Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie and homemade ice-cream. We made cinnamon, vanilla and eggnog ice cream. Kate learned what “a La mode” meant after reading Fancy Nancy’s Thanksgiving book. She asked us for weeks if we were going to have “pie and a La mode”. She cracks us up.

“Everyone is thankful for me!”	Thanksgiving dinner plate

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and now that we’ve recovered, we’re blogging about it. It was a busy week for us. Grandma and Grandpa Hendricks came out to visit from Utah for the week. Since the kids were in school at the beginning of the week, we didn’t get to go far, but we put Grandma and Grandpa to work and kept them busy.

We did go into the city the night before Thanksgiving to see the balloon inflation for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It took us an hour to get to the city, and then an hour and half to fight traffic and find a place where we could park. We ended up parking down near Columbus Circle and taking the subway back up to 81st St. It seems like everyone else had the same idea we did, and since we got there late we were out of luck. It was cold and crowded, but the kids had fun. We followed it up with a trip to an authentic NYC Chinese restaurant.

Thanksgiving Day was laid back. We didn’t go in for the parade because seeing the balloons was bad enough. Besides, you can watch the parade in HD and be warm at home. We decided to smoke a turkey on the grill again this year, and Grandma cooked another turkey in the oven. With all the side dishes, we had plenty of food!

BBQ on Conference Sunday

We had started a fun tradition while living in Washington. We would BBQ something big on conference Sunday and invite someone over for dinner. Moving across the country threw us off track, and it took us a year to get settled in to where we could start this tradition again. On Sunday we grilled a 7 pound pork butt for 6 hours. It was tasty, moist, tender and beautiful. It could have used a little more smoke, but we are still learning. We invited the kids’ piano teacher, Joanne, and her husband Randy. Joanne is a great teacher and friend, along with being the kids’ surrogate grandmother here in New York. They brought a very rich chocolate cake that had a cup and a half of oil in it. Definitely not low in calories.

We enjoyed watching conference this weekend. The kids survived it anyhow. I especially enjoyed Elder Bednar’s talk on prayer, and President Monson’s final talk. It has given me lots to think about and work on.
